The #2 combo: Chile Relleno & (Cheese) Enchilada
Inherent bias: I grew up eating this kind of Mexican food in Santa Barbara, CA, in the late 1950's. My first Chile Relleno was at the legendary El Paseo restaurant, probably in the month of January, when the chiles are usually hotter. At age 9 1/2, a recent transplant from NYC, I broke out in a deep sweat and consumed several small glasses of water. Was I OK? Oh, yeah!!
In recent years, finding this style of Mexican food was challenging for me in California. I did find El Chorlito in San Simeon, which is hands down my favorite Mexican restaurant in California. I have literally driven an hour and a half out of my way, on a 4-hour trip, to have lunch there. They also have Hearst Ranch beef, which is outstanding.
Imagine my excitement to find one of my original comfort foods alive & well in Tucson. Rich, dark red enchilada sauce, Lots of delicious cheeses. Even the frijoles are delicious (no need to ask for black beans). Honestly, I could eat this meal 2-3 times a week for the rest of my life. Ahh....
